Knowing your skin type
Knowing your skin type
The most important step in caring for your skin comes in understanding your specific skin type and how it adapts to certain circumstances or seasonality . Which is why knowing your unique skin type is extremely essential for your skincare.
1. Different Skin Types
A. Normal Skin
Normal skin is also called eudermic. This means it is well-balanced. It is neither too oily nor too dry. Normal skin tends to have balanced pH levels, sebum production and good blood circulation. It has enough moisture retention. Hence it appears healthy, radiant and clear. Normal skin is less prone to skin problems hence It does not requires much hassle in maintenance.
B. Oily Skin
Oily skin is characterized by a greasy appearance. Oily skin is the result of excess sebum production. Due to the production of excess sebum skin looks shiny and oily. It is caused by overactive sebaceous glands producing excess sebum making pores visible and enlarged. Due to large pore size and excess sebum it traps dead cells, dirt from surroundings. Hence it is more prone to Acne breakouts.
Tips for Oily Skin:
People with oily skin must use products that are non comedogenic i.e., they won’t clog the skin pores upon application. Don’t over wash your skin to remove excess oil. It leads to stimulation of your skin glands to produce more sebum as a result your skin gets more oily.
Normally people with Oily skin avoid using moisturisers thinking that they already have enough oiliness. But remember sebum is different from moisture content. Oil is different from water right? Hence we have to use moisturisers that are gel based.
C. Dry Skin
Dry skin is determined by flaky and rough texture. It can at times feel tight and cause irritation. Dry skin is the skin that produces less sebum than other skin types. It has less moisture retention capability. As a result it feels dry, itchy and flaky. This skin type is more prone to wrinkles, fine lines and irritation.
Tips for Dry Skin:
Choosing products with hyaluronic acid is beneficial for people with dry skin as it helps in moisture retention in layers of the skin. Keep applying good oil based moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated. Don’t spend too much time in the shower.Drink lots of water. Use sunscreen to prevent your skin from getting dehydrated
D. Combination Skin
Combination skin is a mix of oily skin and dry skin. Usually in combination skin types, the T-zone is oily and the cheeks are dry. It is the most common skin type. T Zone is skin connecting forehead area, nose are and chin area that forms the shape of T. People with combination skin type are prone to acne on their T Zone area.
Tips for Combination Skin:
One should select different regimes for different parent parts of the skin according to the skin type in that particular area. The products should be non comedogenic products that won’t clog the skin pores and products that are not
E. Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin is more prone to skin allergies. It reacts to new products and ingredients. It becomes red and itchy when reacted to any new products.
Tips for sensitive Skin:
Always do a patch test before using any products. Incorporate only one new product at a time so that exactly you know whether it is causing irritation or not. Select products that are hypoallergenic.
